Summer / Spring Energy Saving Tips

There are ways to lower your energy costs in the spring and summer months without suffering through unbearable heat. Regardless of the type of air conditioning system you rely on, the following suggestions will help you save energy in the summer and spring months.

If you do have central air conditioning, see our AC energy saving tips.

Fans

Ceiling fans can make the room temperature seem as much as ten degrees cooler and slash cooling costs by 25 percent, a significant savings.
  • Experts on energy.gov suggest a ceiling fan allows you to raise the thermostat by four degrees without feeling a change in comfort.
  • Make sure your fans are moving counter-clockwise to blow air down to your body (switch this in the winter months to pull air upwards).
  • Be sure to turn off ceiling fans when you leave the room – their job is to cool people, not rooms.

Ventilation

  • Ventilation is also a great tactic for cooling. If you have an attic fan, clear the vents and make sure it’s working properly.
  • Ensure your bathroom and laundry room have fans vented to the outside to remove heat and humidity from your home.
  • Using your windows strategically for natural ventilation is one of the best energy saving tips for the spring (and fall) months when temperatures are not as high as in the summer months.
